Synopsis: Intelligent Edge Computing Systems (iEDGE), ubiquitous in our everyday lives and involving many areas of Computer, Information Science, and Engineering (CISE), provide an ideal platform for research and training for this Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site. Typically, iEDGE comprises various interacting elements with physical inputs and outputs, communicating through various mediums and controlled by software. Implementing and integrating these components require knowledge taught in early CISE courses (e.g., computer programming and digital design) and advanced courses (e.g., computer networks, computer architecture, communications, and controls). Consequently, REU participants with various backgrounds and experiences will have a platform to integrate and develop practical, real-world solutions. The projects will generate new knowledge by creating solutions involving new computing systems (e.g., sensors and control systems) and applying and testing existing computing systems in new contexts.
